Working with and for young people in Cumbria
Youth Volunteering -
Cumbrians are getting their chance to say a big thank you to great young volunteers across the county with the Cumbria Young Volunteer of the Year award.
The award is being held in partnership between Cumbria County Council, and volunteering agencies Cumbria Youth Alliance (CYA), Cumbria Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) and vinvolved.
Anyone can nominate a volunteer or group of up to five volunteers they know aged 16 to 25 who live in Cumbria and give up their time for a good cause, for free.
The winners will get the outdoor adventure of their choice with Cumbria Outdoors. The organisation they volunteer with will also get a grant of £250. Whatever your nominee’s physical ability there will be a great prize on offer for them.
Axl Day, aged 19, from Aspatria, volunteers with the Youth Health Project run by Cumbria Youth Alliance. He says: “I got into volunteering because I left school at 18 and didn’t feel very confident about getting a job. A friend told me about the Youth Health Project and now I’m training to carry out research into health issues with young people in the county. I definitely think the skills I’ve learned through volunteering on the project will be a big help when I start looking for jobs.
“I think it’s important to sure make young people know that their volunteering is important and appreciated and awards like this are a good way of doing that.”
The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 1st September 2010. The winners will be announced in the autumn edition of the Cumbria County Council residents’ newsletter, Your Cumbria and in the Cumbria media.
To receive a nomination form, text your name and postal or email address to 07929 842 450 or go online to cumbria.gov.uk/youngvolunteer where you can also find more details about the awards and the rules of entry.
