Young Leaders

Our Young Leaders project works across Copeland and Allerdale providing support, ideas and fresh motivations to young people aged between 14 and 19 who are not in employment, education or training (NEET)  or those who are at risk of becoming NEET.

We recognise that the accepted way of learning and fitting in is not always appropriate for everyone.  Especially for young people who struggle at school for whatever reason.

We build a programme around the needs of the young person which may involve elements of accredited learning, volunteering, work placements, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, endurance sports and enhancing life skills.

By using these alternative methods we believe we can help young people face the future challenges that await them.

Farewell Hein

In July 2009 Cumbria Youth Alliance part funded a First Steps to Employment placement, which is where we met 18 year old Hein van der Westhuizen. Shortly after Hein began volunteering on the Health Project, researching and developing localised health issues, tobacco awareness, alcohol, drugs and sexual health workshops. In February 2010 Hein was offered part time employment on Journey of Youth, which quickly led to full time employment at CYA.  Since joining the CYA Team, Hein has been involved in five projects, whilst completing a BSc (Hons) Social Enterprise through the Aspiring Leaders Project. Kicking off Silloth

At Solway Community Technology College we have been working with a group of young men to better their employability by working on building CVs, interview preparation and also exploring their own strengths and weaknesses. One of the students, Adam has been working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.
