One young person’s journey through the Duke of Edinburgh Award

When this young person first began their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award in school, they were excited about the challenge. But midway through the programme, things began to change. Plans became uncertain, and it started to feel like the expedition which was a core part of the experience, might not happen at all. What was supposed to be a journey of independence and discovery became something that felt out of their hands.

"It was like we had no independence to plan our own expedition and get the full experience from the Duke of Edinburgh Award."

The worry wasn’t just about missing out. It was about losing a sense of control and ownership over something they cared about.

Reclaiming the experience

We stepped in.

We supported the young person to take charge of their journey. This wasn’t just as participants, but as planners and leaders. From plotting routes to planning meals, from practising map reading to booking their own campsite, the young person was given both the tools and the trust to lead.

"Coming to CYA, it was a friendly atmosphere and you were encouraged to be in control of what you were doing."

Resilience in the outdoors

During the expedition in Buttermere, the weather was relentless. Pouring rain that soaked everything and tested everyone’s limits! But they kept going.

"Walking in pouring rain in Buttermere showed me how resilient I can be — to see something through to the end and how determined I really am."

The young person completed their Bronze award successfully and is now working toward Silver and Gold. The aim isn’t just to finish the awards, but to travel to London and receive the final award in person.

Looking ahead

Beyond the Duke of Edinburgh Award, this young person has set their sights on the future. They hope to study physiotherapy at university. It’s a goal shaped by their growing confidence.
